We all know that It's immoral to commit an act of violence against another being. Not just because it could result in punishment, but because most humans have remorse for living things. What is it that makes it ok when we are watching it through a screen or an arena? For me, its consent. When a student enrolls in a school, they're signing up to talk to their peers, take classes and learn. Not to lose their life on a Wednesday afternoon to a sick individual who wanted to go on a kill spree. With this hindsight, they likely wouldn't have enrolled. When a boxer signs up for a match, they're well aware that it could end their life. Yes, they're regulations to keep boxers safe, but it is never guaranteed that your opponent won't take an illegal hit. In both of these scenarios, you can end up paralyzed or deceased. Only in one you had the option to opt out of.
However, this does not make me any less remorseful towards those who have permanently altered or lost their lives in such situations. It is deeply upsetting regardless. Actors, athletes, and anyone who is willing to put their lives on the line in the name of entertainment is incredibly honorable.
It is understandable that some people cannot stand to watch any form of violence. Rather it is consensual or non consensual, real or fake. But to say that all types of entertainment that contain violent themes are not ok is unrealistic. Unfortunately, violence is in everything. There has never been a point in time where humans and animals don't use violence against each other. Violence is and will continue to be a theme in our lives. Rather you're an aggressor, victim or living in constant fear of becoming one. To try to ignore that entirely, is harmful.
Of course, entertainment with themes of violence can be bad. When it is not carefully constructed by professionals, it can cause physiological damage to the performers and consumers. It should never target vulnerable audiences, such as children. It is also important for content warnings to be included so the viewers are aware of what's to come. And when it comes to true crime, it has to be consented to and accurate. Otherwise, it is exploitative. Violence in entertainment is only ok if it is done correctly.
